Our Hormones are necessary for our optimal health and wellness. Hormone Imbalance is inevitable if we live long enough! As we age, our hormones start to decline, causing our bodies systems to function less efficiently. Our quality of life can be affected because we start suffering from symptoms associated with this decrease or lack of hormones.

Bioidentical Hormones are natural, plant derived, substances with the same chemical structure as the ones made by your body. Natural compounds including Diosgenin are extracted from Mexican wild yam, Edamame and the like and compounded into the hormones which are recognized by the body and picked up by the receptors because they are 100% identical- ie: the key fits the lock. These substances were introduced into this country from Europe in the 1930’s and have been safely used since then. They are still relatively generally unknown because, because it is compounded, the pharmaceutical companies cannot profit from it. However, that is also a major advantage as it can be customized.

How are bioidentical hormones administered?

injection vitamins

Pills and capsules are the least favored way of administration. Not all the hormones can be given this way, and those that can, have to be digested-passed through the liver, and then excreted into the bloodstream, making dosing difficult if not impossible.

Troches are easier to use and have the advantage of going directly into the blood stream. The problem here being that you can’t control the dosage being actually absorbed.

Creams can be made up with multiple hormones at customized doses. They are inconvenient and not as effective because they need to be applied multiple times daily to maintain consistency of levels. There is also the real danger of transference when the body comes into contact with others.

Injections are usually given weekly or biweekly. Whereas absorption is good, this method sets up a roller coaster effect leading to high hormone levels immediately after and markedly subpar levels at the end of the cycle.

Pellets are the Rolls Royce of the modes of administration! They have many unique advantages over the other methods. The pellets are made by the hormones being fused into small cylindrical compounds. They are painlessly inserted into the Gluteus muscle with a trocar. This method is physiologic in that it most closely resembles what our bodies normally do. The implants are available for the bodies use as it needs it. This method is used by both men and women. Hormone delivery is steady and eliminates all the previously stated disadvantages. They last from 3 to 6 months.

When you are under stress or perform exercise, you require higher levels of estrogen and testosterone to function optimally. Simply put, your body has a built in regulation system that calls for just the right amount to be released. When your ovaries (in women) and testicles (in men) were functioning properly, it was their job to produce these hormones and release them in correct amounts into the blood stream. In menopause and andropause, the ovaries and testicles slow down their production of estrogen and testosterone until they reach a point where they are unable to keep up with the demands of the body. Pellet therapy is able to pick up where the ovaries and testicles left off. The pellets work in partnership with your body to provide for its needs. Any rise in your heart rate will cause increased blood flow over the pellets, releasing the needed amount of hormones into your blood stream. In the case of exercise, an increased thermal release from the muscles being exercised, will also cause a release of hormones from the pellets.

How do I get started?

The first step is to have a consultation with Dr Harris along with the proper lab testing. Because other things can contribute to and cause symptoms, the workup addresses this and is complete. There are times when other hormones such as your thyroid hormones also need to be adjusted. Your lab results are used to customize your treatment. As your body returns to normalized function, you will sleep better, think more clearly, and enjoy an increase in your libido. Without the hot flashes and erectile dysfunction you will feel like the old you again!
