Erectile Dysfunction Q&A

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction describes the inability to achieve and maintain an erection that’s healthy enough for sex.

As men age, they’re at increased risk for developing erectile dysfunction. While most men experience occasional erectile dysfunction because of stress, use of certain medications, or alcohol use, persistent erectile dysfunction can also be the result of more serious underlying health conditions, such as:

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Sleep apnea
  • High cholesterol
  • Poor dental health
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Poor blood circulation
  • Certain medication

Chronic health conditions like diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), and thyroid diseases can contribute to erectile dysfunction. Mental health issues like anxiety and depression might also be a factor.

How is erectile dysfunction diagnosed?

To identify what’s causing erectile dysfunction, Dr. Harris spends time getting to understand your lifestyle, your medical background, and your health. She focuses on identifying physical, emotional, and mental stressors in your life that can interfere with your sexual wellness.

Dr. Harris may also perform a comprehensive physical exam and may request diagnostic bloodwork to evaluate your blood sugar and cholesterol levels among other things. She also tests your hormone levels to confirm or rule out a hormone imbalance.

How is erectile dysfunction treated?

Initially, Dr. Harris might suggest lifestyle changes that help improve the quality of your erections.

These changes may include quitting smoking, eating a healthy, balanced diet, and getting daily exercise to improve your blood circulation. You might also need to begin treatment for uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol.

If these conservative therapies aren’t enough to treat erectile dysfunction, Dr. Harris can customize a treatment plan using:

Acoustic pulsewave therapy and P-Shot® therapy

Acoustic pulse wave technology clears obstructed blood vessels and stimulates the growth of new vessels in the penis to enhance erections. This noninvasive procedure offers long-lasting results with no side effects.

Dr. Harris can combine acoustic pulsewave therapy with the Priapus Shot (P-Shot), an injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) into the penis to improve blood flow and regenerate penile tissue.

Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE5 inhibitors) increase blood flow in the penis and relax surrounding muscles to enable a temporary erection. Amino acids - the building blocks of proteins, called peptides can also be injected to provide temporary erectile stimulation.

Penile injections

Injections into your penis can quickly boost blood flow to the area to improve your erections. Dr. Harris teaches you how to inject yourself prior to sex.

Penile implants

Surgically implanted, inflatable devices go into your penis that allows you to artificially control your erection before sex.

Vascular reconstruction

More extensive surgical techniques are available that enhance blood flow to your penis and in the surrounding tissues to promote healthier erections. To find out which erectile dysfunction treatment is right for you, schedule a consultation online or by calling The Wellness Restoration Center today.
