Hair Loss Q&A

What causes hair loss?

Hair loss is often a side effect of the natural aging process. As you get older, your hair can begin to thin and fall out. Initially, you might have small, patchy areas on your scalp where hair doesn’t grow, but these areas eventually spread out.

Hormonal changes are a common cause of hair loss in both men and women. Hormone-related hair loss can be a temporary or permanent condition. You might also be prone to hair loss because of:

  • Stress
  • Poor nutrition
  • Hereditary conditions
  • Underlying medical conditions
  • Use of certain medications

If you use excessive styling products in your hair or pull hair into tight braids, you may begin losing your hair at an early age. Wearing hats all the time can also affect hair growth.

How is hair loss diagnosed?

To determine what’s causing your hair thinning or loss, Dr. Harris performs a comprehensive physical exam. She also discusses your diet, lifestyle, and hair care routine to better understand your needs.

You might also need bloodwork to identify underlying health issues, including a hormonal imbalance.

Once she evaluates the severity of your condition, Dr. Harris personalizes a treatment plan that focuses on encouraging natural hair growth.

How is hair loss treated?

Your treatment plan for hair loss depends on its underlying cause. You might need to change medications you’re taking for other health conditions or stop using certain styling products to slow down the progression of your hair loss.

Dr. Harris may also recommend:

Medications

Over-the-counter or prescription medications like minoxidil can help regrow hair. You apply the medications topically to your scalp or use shampoo daily to improve the health of your hair. Prescription medication such as Anagen FX can be utilized as well.

PRP therapy

Another option for stimulating new hair growth is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. PRP is found naturally in your body and contains growth factors that stimulate your hair follicles to produce new hairs.

This treatment involves withdrawing a sample of your blood and processing it in a centrifuge to achieve a high concentration of PRP. Dr. Harris injects the PRP into your scalp and over time, your natural hair grows longer, thicker, and stronger. This can also be done painlessly with micro-current (No injections!).
